Cape Town, South Africa, has reclaimed its position as the best-value long-haul holiday destination for British travelers, according to the 2024 Post Office Long Haul Holiday Report. For the first time in six years, Cape Town has emerged at the top of the cost-of-living barometer, which compares the price of everyday tourist staples, such as meals and drinks, across 32 global destinations. A weaker South African rand and lower local prices have led to a 12% reduction in costs for UK tourists compared to last year, with a basket of 10 tourist staples now costing around £55.59.

Other top-value destinations include Tokyo, in second place, and Hoi An, Vietnam, in third. Tokyo’s prices have dropped by 13.5%, while Hoi An fell from the top spot due to a 21% price increase. Popular locations like Bali and Sharm el-Sheikh also rank high for value.

Laura Plunkett, Head of Travel Money at Post Office, emphasized the importance of “holiday homework” to maximize savings:

“Our research revealed wide variations in the cost of tourist staples across the 32 destinations we surveyed. This means holidaymakers could save a lot of money and make a big difference to the overall cost of their winter sun trip by doing some basic holiday homework before booking to find out where meals, drinks, and other staples will cost the least.”

To further cut costs, Plunkett advises travelers to exchange money in advance and take advantage of better exchange rates by exchanging over £500 at the Post Office or using the Post Office Travel Money Card to avoid overseas transaction charges.

This year’s report highlights that thorough planning and smart spending can make a significant difference for those seeking winter sun escapes. Cape Town’s affordability and natural beauty and attractions make it a top choice for UK tourists in 2024.
