South Africa’s hosting of the 2025 G20 Summit in Johannesburg this November marks a historic milestone as the first G20 Summit on African soil. This prestigious event is poised to transform the country’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, unlocking unparalleled opportunities for growth and innovation within the tourism industry.

With 50,000 to 60,000 delegates expected to attend G20-related meetings across South Africa—along with 5,000 to 8,000 accompanying guests—the summit represents the largest influx of high-profile international visitors since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“This is one of the biggest moments for South Africa since hosting the World Cup,” says Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa , CEO of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa. “The G20 Summit will showcase our world-class infrastructure and hospitality, positioning the country as a global leader in the MICE industry.”

A Proven Track Record in Hosting World-Class Events

South Africa has long demonstrated its ability to successfully host large-scale international events, reinforcing its reputation as a premier MICE destination. Notable events include:

  • 2010 FIFA World Cup– The first World Cup held on African soil, drawing over 3 million spectators and showcasing South Africa’s ability to manage a global mega-event.
  • 2011 COP17 Climate Change Conference (Durban)– A pivotal moment in global climate negotiations, with thousands of delegates attending.
  • 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)– Successfully hosted the continent’s premier football tournament.
  • 2013 BRICS Summit (Durban)– Strengthened South Africa’s diplomatic role on the world stage.
  • 2018 BRICS Summit (Johannesburg)– Further solidified South Africa’s standing as a key global economic player.
  • 2018 Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 (Johannesburg)– Attracted global superstars and reinforced South Africa’s cultural appeal.
  • 2019 Rugby World Cup Sevens (Cape Town)– Demonstrated world-class sporting infrastructure and hospitality.
  • 2023 Netball World Cup (Cape Town)– Showcased South Africa’s expertise in hosting international sporting events.
  • 2023 BRICS Summit (Johannesburg)– Highlighted South Africa’s role in shaping global economic policies.

This impressive track record underscores South Africa’s readiness to host the G20 Summit, ensuring a seamless and impactful event that will leave a lasting legacy for the MICE industry and beyond.

A Boon for Economic Growth

South Africa’s MICE industry, valued at $6.6 billion in 2023, is projected to experience exponential growth, with experts predicting it could quadruple in value over the next eight years, reaching $25.9 billion by 2032.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille emphasizes the summit’s significance beyond its immediate economic benefits. “We will use this opportunity to showcase South Africa’s beauty through tailored tourism packages, encouraging delegates to arrive early, stay longer, and explore more of our country,” she said.

In 2023, international tourism contributed R95 billion to South Africa’s economy. The G20 Summit is expected to propel these figures even higher.

Infrastructure and Service Upgrades Underway

Johannesburg is undergoing extensive urban improvements to ensure a seamless experience for visitors. A citywide rejuvenation project is enhancing roads, safety, and cleanliness, while 6,000 wardens are being trained in tourism support, traffic control, and security.

Sthembiso Dlamini, CEO of Gauteng Tourism Authority, highlights the long-term benefits: “These investments will not only serve the G20 but will leave a lasting legacy for future international events.”

Strengthening South Africa’s MICE Credentials

Hosting the G20 Summit bolsters South Africa’s position as Africa’s premier MICE destination. Glenton de Kock, CEO of the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry, notes, “This event enhances our ability to bid for and secure future international conferences, further solidifying our standing in the global MICE sector.”

South Africa has already secured 25 international business events through 2029, projected to inject over R240 million into the economy. The exposure from the G20 Summit will only strengthen its competitiveness in attracting further high-profile gatherings.

A Pan-African Opportunity

The Meetings Africa 2025 trade show recently showcased the collective strength of Africa’s MICE sector, generating R420 million for South Africa’s economy. With over 410 exhibitors from 27 African countries, including first-time participants from Chad, Guinea, Morocco, and Madagascar, the event underscored Africa’s rising prominence in the global MICE industry.

As South Africa welcomes G20 delegates, the country’s state-of-the-art facilities, top-tier hospitality, and diverse tourism offerings will create a lasting impact, benefiting not just South Africa but the entire continent’s tourism landscape.

A Legacy Beyond 2025

The 2025 G20 Summit is more than just a diplomatic event—it is a powerful statement that Africa is ready to take its rightful place in global economic leadership. “This is a pivotal moment for South Africa and the continent,” Minister de Lille affirms. “We are ready to showcase our capabilities and welcome the world with open arms.”

By capitalizing on this opportunity, South Africa aims to leave an enduring legacy—boosting its MICE sector, enhancing its global reputation, and driving long-term economic growth that will benefit the nation and the broader African region for years to come.
